Obituary for Marjorie J. Renner


Marjorie J. Renner, 94, of La Crosse, passed away March 18, 2024, at Eagle Crest South in La Crosse.

She was born May 7, 1929, to Clarence C. and Oca M. (Burkhardt) Oliver in rural Viroqua. Marjorie was raised on a small farm and helped in the grocery store that her parents owned in Romance, Wis.

After graduating from Viroqua High School in 1947, she went to work in the office at the Gambles Store downtown La Crosse. Marjorie met George Renner on New Years Eve in 1953 and they were married on June 11, 1955. Together they had three children, Stacy (Wade Whiddon), followed by Steven (Marcia) and then Michael (Elizabeth).

For many years, Marjorie was a stay at home mom. She then went to work in the office at Leithold’s Music. She spent many happy hours dancing, especially at Polka Fests. Marjorie and George traveled throughout the United States and Canada and also Australia, New Zealand and several European Countries. She enjoyed attending plays and had recorded seeing at least 420 of them. Marjorie was an active member of English Lutheran Church for 68 years serving as a teacher, money counter, and on the altar guild.

She was preceded in death by brothers and sisters-in-law, Wilbert and Ruth Oliver and Orbin and Verna Oliver and brother-in-law, Lewis McGowen.

In addition to her beloved husband, George and their children, Marjorie is survived by six grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Services are being planned and arrangements will be announced by the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to Sugar Creek Bible Camp or a charity of the donor’s choice.
