Obituary for Linda Jones Hughes

Linda Jones Hughes, 75, of La Crosse, passed away Saturday, March 9, 2024, at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse. She was born May 22, 1948, in Bangor, Wis., to Vernon and Beatrice (Henker) Jones. After graduating from Bangor High School, Linda attended Viterbo University in La Crosse and then Queens University and Central Piedmont Community College, both in Charlotte, N.C. Her studies were in Art, Design, and Retail Sales. Linda loved history and served on the Bicentennial committees for local and county activities. She also served as Jaycette’s president and headed many committees. Linda was one of the first members in promoting child car-seat safety during her Jaycette years. She was the Church Librarian for many years at Messiah Lutheran Church in Charlotte, N.C. Promoting Christian books and encouraging people to read the supplements to God’s Word was Linda’s labor of love. Linda was trained and commissioned as a Stephen Minister for Christian peer counseling at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Carol Stream, Ill. She also was a writer, mainly of a Christian nature, and delivered many Christian messages at her church in Charlotte. Linda wrote her family’s history book and several poems. She was also an avid Chef and gardener and admitted to being addicted to the Food-Network and all cooking and gardening shows. Linda was known as the “grilling lady” because she enjoyed grilling all year round. She tried out many new recipes on everyone from family to neighbors, to co-workers. Linda worked for years in the design field, doing window treatments for countless homes. Her work with colors also transferred to the cosmetics field where she worked for Estee’ Lauder for a number of years. She also worked in the cosmetic departments for Macy’s, Herbergers, and Walgreens. Despite how busy Linda was, her two sons and grandchildren were her joy. She always had treats for everyone.

Survivors include two sons, Nathaniel Bergh of Ontario, Wis., and Andrew (Ashley) Hughes of Huntersville, N.C.; grandchildren, Alexia of Sparta, Christopher of Sparta, and Jessica (Jon) Philavanh of West Salem, and Hudson, Harlow, and Rowan Hughes of Huntersville, N.C.; great-grandchildren, Jaiden, Jonaven, and Julian; brothers, Paul (Diane) Jones of Onalaska and Timothy (Kari) Jones of Sparta; sisters, Valerie (David) Pfeiffer of Lago Vista, Texas and Jeannie (Lyndon) Jackson of Onalaska; and aunts, nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and many cousins. Linda was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Monday, March 18, 2024, at Faith Lutheran Church, 1407 Main St., La Crosse. Pastor Jacob Eichers will officiate. Burial will be in Burns Cemetery, rural Bangor. A visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service Monday at the church.
