Obituary for Virgil E. Stetzer


Virgil E. “Bud” Stetzer, 91, of West Salem, formerly Mindoro, passed away Friday, February 23, 2024 at Journey Home Hospice, Tomah VA, surrounded by his daughters.

He was born September 2, 1932 in Melrose to Ernest and Dora (Huntington) Stetzer. He was raised near the Black River and spent a lot of time with his grandpa and grandma Stetzer. He served in the US Navy from March 6, 1952-October 8, 1954. He was stationed in Kingsville, TX and the USS Ticonderoga.

He married Lois Paisley on April 21, 1956. They farmed in the Burr Oak and Bangor area for several years. Bud was a jack of all trades, working at the feed mill, driving dump trucks, hauling milk and remodeling and building houses until his retirement.

He is survived by his daughters, Sheila (Jim) Robertson of Sparta, Kathy (Jeff) Skarboszweski of La Crosse, and Patricia (Larry) Chua of Deerfield; nine grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and great, great-grandchildren. He is further survived by his sisters, Maxine Gudbaur of Sparta and Joyce (Gary) Koss of Holmen; and brothers, Chauncey (Mary) Stetzer of Sparta, Ernest Jr. (Sue) Stetzer of Onalaska, Ellis (Judy) Stetzer of Onalaska, and Lynn (Matt) Stetzer of New Orleans. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Allan; and his wife of 64 years, Lois.

A memorial services will be held at 11 A.M. Saturday, March 9, 2024, at Christ Ev. Lutheran Church, N9113 State Road 108, Mindoro, WI 54644. Pastor Christopher Johns will officiate. Burial will follow with military honors at Farmington Cemetery, Mindoro. A Visitation will precede funeral services from 10 a.m. until time of service at the church. Lunch will follow the service and internment.
