Obituary for Garland F.O. Schulze

Garland Fredrick Otto Schulze


Garland Fredrick Otto Schulze, 78, of Caledonia, Minn., died Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at Caledonia Care & Rehab.

He was born August 9, 1932, in Caledonia, the son of Hannah Schroeder and Fremont Schulze. On April 23, 1955, he married Joanne McKoskey at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in La Crosse, Wis.  He farmed for 29 years in Union Township, near Caledonia. He retired, moving to Caledonia in 1989, and began the next chapter of his career working for Houston Co-op for 15 years. Garland loved playing cards, going on bus tours with his wife and friends, hunting, fishing, gardening, riding his motorcycle, and woodworking, building birdhouses, mobiles and bird feeders for his children and grandchildren.

Garland is survived by his wife, Joanne; his five children, Carol (Rodney) Johnson of New Holstein, Wis., Susan (Lenny) Klemp of La Crescent, Minn., Gary (Mary Jo) Schulze of Brownsville, Minn., Dianne Schulze of Houston, Minn., and Lorrie (Matt) Weinbender of Brownsville; ten grandchildren, Sarah and Abby Johnson, Neil (Elisa) Schulze, Greg Schulze, Carl, Jordan and Kirstin Klemp, and Brynne, Elise and Alec Weinbender; one great-grandchild, Alix Johnson; two brothers, Leland and Gene (Rita); one sister, Elaine Wilhelm; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Schulze; and many nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fremont and Hannah Schulze; daughter, Sally Schulze; brother-in-law, Paul Wilhelm; sister-in-law, Ann Schulze; nieces, Jeanette Wilhelm and Karen Wilhelm; and a nephew, Jason Schulze.

Funeral services will be Monday, March 28, 2011, at 11:00 a.m., at St. John’s  Ev. Lutheran Church, 650 N. Kingston St., Caledonia. Rev. Jon Wolff will officiate. Burial will be in Union Ridge Cemetery. Friends may call at Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home, 518 W. Main St., Caledonia, on Sunday from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. and also at the church on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the donor’s choice. Online condolences can be made to the family at
