Obituary for Delores I. "Talu" Olson

Delores I. "Talu" Olson

Surrounded by the love of family and friends, Talu’s extraordinary journey on this Earth came to an end on Sunday, March 13, 2011, after a very short stay at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse. She was 81 years young.

Talu was born in Bangor on November 27, 1929, to Walter and Ellen (Brackey) Hesselberg. She grew up on the 120 acre family farm with her eight siblings. She graduated from Bangor High School at age 16 and began teaching in a one-room school after receiving her two-year rural education degree from LaCrosse Teachers’ College. She later returned to night school to earn her bachelor of science degree. In 1952, she began teaching third grade in Sparta and finished her 41-year career as a first grade teacher at Lawrence Lawson Elementary School in SpartaOn June 18, 1950, Talu married Gordon John Olson, also of Bangor. They had two daughters and were married 25 years before Gordon was killed in an accident at Fort McCoy on September 10, 1975.  In retirement, Talu kept busy with golf, bowling, playing cards, dancing, visiting the casino, traveling, and spending as much time as possible with her family and many, many friends. Of course, she also was an active and dedicated member of the Rockland United Methodist Church and her retired teachers association.

She is survived by daughters, Sally McLendon of Sparta and her children: Alettie (fiancé, Nate Mueller), Jarred, Jeanne, Erin, and Darrin, and Jill (Joe) Packey of Fridley, Minn. and their children: Kess, Amara, and Ryker; her brother and sister-in-law, Wilmer and Jane Hesselberg of Bangor; her brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Laurie Hesselberg of Sparta; many loving nieces and nephews who adored her; and her loving companion, Ray Lowe.

Talu was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon; brothers, Lawrence, Walter, Elwin, and Raymond Hesselberg; and sisters, Edna May Liedblad and LaVone Blahut.
