Lavaine E. “Lee” Diersen, age 66, of Caledonia, Minn., died peacefully surrounded by his family on Wednesday morning, March 9, 2011, in his home.
Lavaine was born on June 14, 1944, at Caledonia Hospital to Erwin and Ruth (Schroeder) Diersen. Lavaine grew up in rural Freeburg until the family moved to Caledonia in 1956. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church of Caledonia. He graduated from Caledonia High School in 1962. Lavaine enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in Germany and the Middle East. On June 17, 1967, he married Lynette Varnum at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Caledonia. Over the years, the Lord blessed them with five children. Lee worked over forty years at Wettstein's in La Crosse. He retired in 2008 to devote his time to his love of tree farming on his land southeast of Caledonia. He was a lifelong member of St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church, Caledonia, serving on the Board of Elders and the Church Council. Lavaine also belonged to the Loveless-Eikens American Legion Post 191 of Caledonia.
Lavaine is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Lyn; and their family: Brooke (Matthew), Emma, Morgan, Olivia, and Mason Prost, all of Watertown, Wis., Matthew (Cindy), Benjamin, Victoria, Nicholas, and Alexander Diersen, all of Brookings, S.D., Gregory (Kelly), Alexa, Callahan, Magdala, and Kincaid Diersen, all of Watertown, S.D., Stephanie (William), Ezekiel, and Rachel Huff, all of Caledonia, and Amanda (Luke), Jovial, Regan, Kensey, and Bayla King, all of Caledonia. He is also survived by his siblings, Darlene Gengler Rommes, Gerald (Nancy) Diersen, and Neldene (Paul) Rommes, all of Caledonia; his step-sisters, Caroline (Harold) Jacobson of Rushford, Minn. and Gracie (John) Schueler of Winona, Minn.; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his step-father, Gustal Hahn; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Selma and Rex Varnum. 
Funeral services will be Sunday, March 13, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. at St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church, 650 N. Kingston St., Caledonia.  Rev. Tom Schultz will officiate.  Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Caledonia, with military honors by the Caledonia American Legion Post 191 and the U.S. Army Funeral Honor Guard. Friends may call at Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home, 518 W. Main St., Caledonia, on Saturday from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and also at the church on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service.  Online condolences may be sent at
