Obituary for Bernard Knudtson

Bernard J. Knudtson
Bernard J. Knudtson, 78, of La Crosse, passed peacefully on Wednesday, November 3, 2010, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.
He was born September 7, 1932, in Bangor to Bernard Alvin and Florence (Meyer) Knudtson. Bernie served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. On May 4, 1957, he married Marjorie Mae Piske. After the Army, Bernie went to school in Utah and became a telegrapher and worked for the Rock Island Railroad for nine years. A career change made him the owner of Knudtson Standard Station in La Crosse for three years. After this, he worked for Lumberman's Service/Amerhart in La Crosse as an operations manager for 37 years. Upon retirement, he continued to be busy working for the La Crosse Country Club and farming. He was a 48 year member of Mt. Calvary Ev. Lutheran Church and also a member of the Roy L. Vingers American Legion Post 52, both of La Crosse. Bernie was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, and was always a hard worker. He was happiest when he was surrounded by his family and friends. In his retirement, he and Marge traveled extensively spending many winters in the south. He enjoyed many holidays with his family and taking several vacations with them. He was very proud of the accomplishments of his children and his grandchildren. Golfing with his friends at Pine Creek Golf Course was also a favorite pastime. He greatly enjoyed the love and caring of all his neighbors and the many gatherings that were held during the 48 years of living in their great neighborhood. Bernie lived life to the fullest, always having a sense of humor and a willingness to lend a helping hand, both of which will be sadly missed.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Marge; his two daughters, Suzette (Michael) Henahan of Virginia Beach, Va. and Julie Johnson of La Crosse; three grandsons, Lucas Johnson, Conner Henahan, and Alex Johnson; one granddaughter, Haley Henahan; three sisters, Alice (Myron) Pfaff and Luella (Douglas) Pierce, both of Bangor, and Florence (Ronald) Munson of La Crosse; and three brothers, Lyle (Marty) of La Crosse, Donald (Nancy) of Cottage Grove, Minn., and Edmund "Butch" (Jane) of Bangor.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Kenneth (Doris) and Harold (Mary Lou).
Funeral services will be Saturday, November 6, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Calvary Ev. Lutheran Church, 1411 So. 16th Street, La Crosse. Rev. Robert Wassermann will officiate. Burial will be in Christ Ev. Lutheran Cemetery, West Salem, with military honors by the La Crosse American Legion Post 52 and the U.S. Army Funeral Honor Guard.
