Obituary for Elmer E. Seeger

Elmer E. Seeger
Elmer E. Seeger, 88, of West Salem, died Friday, February 11, 2011, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.
He was born April 3, 1922, in West Salem to Carl and Mary (Meyer) Seeger.  Elmer was a 1940 graduate of West Salem High School.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served from 1943-1946.  On October 9, 1946, Elmer married Evelyn Wege at Christ Ev. Lutheran Church in West Salem, where he has been a lifetime member.  Together, they owned and operated Seeger's Surge Dairy Equipment in West Salem for 18 years until their retirement in 1986.  Elmer was a lifetime member of the Berg-Hemker-Olson American Legion Post 51 of West Salem, serving one term as Commander, 30 years as Treasurer, and 50 years on the military funeral honor guard.  Also for 50 years, he was proud to place flags on veterans' graves in many area cemeteries for Memorial Day.  Elmer served one term as a Trustee for the West Salem Village Board.  He was a 30 year member of the West Salem Volunteer Fire Department also serving as Treasurer.  In his younger years, Elmer was an avid bowler and in 1963, he bowled a perfect 300 game.  At the age of 55, he took up the game of golf and acheived two holes-in-one. 
Survivors include his wife of over 64 years, Evelyn; seven children, Dennis of Eden Prairie, Minn., David (Kim), James (Teresa), Donna (Brad) Monson, Maryrose (Jon) Hetland, Ron (Kris), and Jerry (Janice), all of West Salem; ten grandchildren, Traci (John) Streeter of Holland, Mich., April Monson and Brent  Monson (Holly), both of California, Dani (fiance, Brad) Seeger of La Crosse, Mallory Seeger of Green Bay, Wis., Cole Seeger of West Salem, and Emmylou and Laura Hetland and Katie and Janna Seeger, all of West Salem; two great-grandchildren, Ethan and Dylan Streeter; four step-grandchildren, Mathea Gray of Madison, Wis., Susan Wong (John) of Holmen, and Douglas and Justin Steiger, both of La Crosse; one brother, Fritz Seeger of West Salem; a sister-in-law, Lois Seeger of La Crosse; a brother-in-law, Frederick Wege of West Salem; a special niece, Lois (Bub) Pierce of Tomah, Wis.; and many other nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Janice (Larry) Thompson; a brother, Edwin; a half-brother, Harry (Blanche) Brocade; two half-sisters, Erna (Cyril) Skroch and Hulda (Elmer) Hemker; and four sisters-in-law, Esther Seeger, Lois Ann Seeger, Marion (Gil) Zimmerman, and Evelyn Wege.
Memorial services will be Saturday, February 19, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Ev. Lutheran Church, 500 Park St., West Salem.  Pastor Joel Stuebs will officiate.  Burial will be in the church cemetery with military honors by the West Salem American Legion Post 51 and the U.S. Navy Funeral Honor Guard.  Friends may call at Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home, (Jostad Chapel), 121 N. Youlon St., West Salem, on Friday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.  In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to be given to the Christ Ev. Lutheran Church Building Fund, the West Salem American Legion Post 51, or the West Salem Volunteer Fire Department.  Online condolences may be sent at
