Obituary for Robert E. "Bob" Steigerwald


Robert E. "Bob" Steigerwald, 86, of Bangor, died Saturday, February 5, 2011, at his home.
Bob was born September 20, 1924, in Wexford, Penn., to Joseph and Hildagard (Rudolph) Steigerwald.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during WWII in the European Theatre with the 28th Infantry Division but returned to Wisconsin after being wounded in his leg.  Bob was a member of the Anderson-Good American Legion Post 40 of Bangor and the Bangor VFW Post 8278.  After the military, he married Catherine Hammes on January 21, 1947, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bangor and they recently celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary.  Bob was employed as a machinist at Trane Company in La Crosse for 39 years.  He enjoyed sports, especially baseball and his favorite team was the Pittsburgh Pirates.  In his younger years, Bob played for the Bangor City Team and after he no longer played himself, he loved to watch his children and grandchildren play for several years to follow.  His favorite hobby was cutting and splitting wood and also playing cards.
Survivors include his wife, Catherine; three sons, Joel (special friend, Mary Horton) of French Island, Robert (Nancy) of Wittenberg, Wis., and Jerry (Nancy) of Bangor; ten grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mae Wiskeman of Wexford, Penn. and Patricia (Joseph, Sr.) Brunner of Zelienople, Penn.; one brother-in-law, William Zunic of Wexford, Penn.; and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter-in-law, Rose Steigerwald; three sisters; and two brothers.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, February 9, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 303 So. 16th Ave., Bangor.  Father Bob Hegenbarth will officiate.  Burial will be in the church cemetery with military honors by the Bangor American Legion Post 40, the Bangor VFW Post 8278, and the U.S. Army Funeral Honor Guard.  Friends may call at Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home, Hwy 162 and Hattan St., Bangor, on Tuesday beginning at 5:00 p.m. and concluding with a rosary at 7:00 p.m.  Friends may also call at the church on Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of mass.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Bangor First Responders.  Online condolences may be sent at www.jandtfredrickson.com.
