Walter A. Beneke, 88, of Caledonia, Minn., and formerly of Eitzen, Minn., passed away suddenly at his home on Saturday, December 4, 2010, of a heart attack.
He was born November 2, 1922, in rural New Albin, Iowa, to William and Mary (Meyer) Beneke. On April 18, 1944, he married Margaret Thiele and she preceded him in death on September 3, 1993.
Walter was a lifelong area resident. He farmed outside of Eitzen until 1989 when he and his wife moved to Caledonia. Walter was actively involved in various local organizations and was a member of St. Luke’s United Church of Christ, Eitzen. After his retirement, Walter enjoyed woodcarving and teaching himself to play many musical instruments by ear.
Survivors include his three children, Gary (Karen) of Freeport, Ill., Garnet (Carla) of Onalaska, Wis., and Ann Marie (Rick) Lubinski of Winona, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Jeff (Renee), Brian, Stacie (Pat), Katy, Justin, Maggie (fiancé, Alex), and Jordyn; four great-grandchildren, Madalyn, Zachary, Ethan, and Emily; special and dear friend, Vivian Beneke; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, Walter was preceded in death by his parents; two infant grandchildren; four brothers; and seven sisters. Walter was the last surviving sibling of twelve.
Memorial services will be Wednesday, December 8, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Luke’s United Church of Christ, Eitzen. Rev. Kent A. Meyer, Ph.D., will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until time of service.
