Obituary for Shirley June

Shirley I. (Steinhoff) June, 91, formerly of La Crosse and Onalaska, died Friday, February 10, 2023 at Sylvester Cottage in the Palm Cottages Assisted Living and Memory Care Community of Rockledge, Florida.

She was born September 2, 1931, in Sparta, Wisconsin to August and Emilie (Steingraeber) Steinhoff. On November 27, 1949 she married Douglas June in Sparta, Wisconsin.

She spent most of her life in the coulee region, tending her home and caring for extended family members while still making time for activities outside the home. Those activities included church circles at Wesley United Methodist Church, UCT (United Commercial Travelers), Order of Eastern Star, Social Order of Beauceant and Beta Sigma Phi International Sorority. She was a busy volunteer for the many projects those groups supported – the highlight of which was the Christmas Mitten trees, which she happily knitted for and gathered yarn to supply others who would knit year-round to supply the needed mittens, hats and scarves!

Shirley moved to Florida in 2013 to be closer to her daughter and is survived by that daughter, Kris (William) Nutter, and a granddaughter, Carol Nutter. She was preceded in death by her entire family and her only grandson.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, June 17, 2023, at Fredrickson Funeral Home, Woodruff Chapel, 4239 Mormon Coulee Rd., La Crosse. Her family requests guests wear casual, comfortable, and colorful clothing. A visitation will be held from 10:30 a.m., until the time of service. A private burial will be held at a later date in Mormon Coulee Memorial Park Cemetery in La Crosse.
