Alfred G. LaForgia

Alfred G. LaForgia, 70, formerly of Caledonia, Minn., died Friday, September 30, 2011, at Mayo Clinic Health System, Mankato, Minn.  He was born December 13, 1940, in Los Angeles, Calif., the son of Joseph and Alice (Johnson) LaForgia. Alfred attended public school in Spring Grove, Minn., and received his G.E.D. while serving in the United States Army from 1958 until 1964. Upon being honorably discharged from the Army, he worked as a welder for General Motors, the Genoa Power Plant, and on the installation of the natural gas pipeline on French Island. While working at Walt Disney World, Alfred also welded many of the animal sculptures on a knoll on the park grounds. During his employment at the General Motors Plant in Van Neys, Calif., he was severely injured in a motorcycle accident which required him to take early retirement from the work he loved and was excellent at.  Survivors include one son, Glenn (Karen) LaForgia of Bingham, Maine; one daughter, Christine Kohler of Coventry, R.I.; two sisters, Arlene (Vern) Schueler of Winona, Minn., and Carolyn Krambeer of Cresco, Iowa; three half brothers, Lucio, Frank, and Donnie LaForgia; and many nieces, nephews, and longtime friends.  Alfred was preceded in death by his parents; his step-father, Elmer Hagen; his former wife, Nancy; one nephew, Brian Kramber; one brother-in-law, Larry Krambeer; and many aunts and uncles.  Funeral services will be Thursday, October 6, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at Wilmington Lutheran Church, Wilmington Township, Houston County, Minn. Burial will be the church cemetery with military honors by the Loveless-Eikens American Legion Post 191 and the VFW Houston County Post 3833, both of Caledonia, and the United States Army Funeral Honor Guard. Friends may call at the church on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home, Caledonia, Minn., is in charge of arrangements.
