Margaret S. "Marge" Gollnik, 84, of Sparta, formerly of Bangor, died Tuesday, September 13, 2011, at Morrow Memorial Home, Sparta.
She was born September 19, 1926, in Angelo, Wis., to Victor Dewey and Carrie (Shaw) Hughes.  On September 29, 1946, she married Walter "Bud" Gollnik at  the First Methodist Church in Sparta, and he preceded her in death on April 9, 2007.  Marge was one of the original telephone operators in Bangor.  She was also a columnist for the West Salem Countryman and Bangor ChronicleShe was an active member of St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran Church in Bangor, where she served on the ladies aid, taught Sunday school and was a Girl Pioneer leader.  For many years, Marge and her husband were the custodians for the church as well as the school.  She was past president of La Crosse County Homemakers and the La Crosse County Fair Grounds Association, 4-H leader and board past president, and past president and secretary of the Sparta High School Alumni Association.  Marge played an integral part in the incepton of the Bangor Historical Society where she also served as a board member.  She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, gardening, playing cards, doing crossword puzzles, fishing, and hunting.  Marge was a wonderful homemaker who enjoyed taking care of her family and always looked forward to spending time with her grandchildren.
 
Survivors include five children, Barbara (Michael) Sullivan of Mindoro, Robert (Gina) Gollnik of Bangor, Beth (Doug) Reinhart of Onalaska, Bradley (Susan) Gollnik of West Salem, and Becky (David) Pieper of Cashton; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister, Ruth (Merlin) Ebert of Sparta; one sister-in-law, Phyllis Hughes of Sparta; her special friend, Sharon Seamster of Cataract; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and special friends.  In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Douglas, Robert (Charlotte), and Richard Hughes; and her nephew, Steven Hughes.
 
Funeral services will be Friday, September 16, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran Church, 401 16th Ave. North, Bangor.  Rev. Roy Hefti will officiate.  Burial will be in Burns Cemetery.  Friends may call at the church on Thursday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and also on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Paul's Lutheran School, Bangor, or St. Patrick's Catholic School, Sparta.  Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home, Bangor, is in charge of arrangements.  Online condolences may be sent at www.jandtfredrickson.com.
