Obituary for Charles John "Charlie" or "Chuck" Gartner

Charles John "Charlie" or "Chuck" Gartner
Charles John "Charlie" or "Chuck" Gartner, 48, of Genoa, Wis., died peacefully at home on September 12, 2011, surrounded by family after a courageous six month battle with brain cancer.
Charlie was born in La Crosse on January 3, 1963, to Charles and Mary (Pedretti) Gartner. He retired from the United States Army Reserves in 2006 after almost 22 years of service, including a year long deployment to Kuwait as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Charlie graduated from Viroqua High School in 1981, then attended WWTC, and graduated from Viterbo University in La Crosse in 2003. On February 11, 1995, he was united in marriage to Lisa Kufalk in La Crosse. Charlie was employed as a Manufacturing Engineer at Mcloone Metal Graphics in La Crosse until the time of his illness. Charlie "Chuck" was a quiet man with a wonderful sense of dry humor. He touched everyone he met with his quick smile, contagious positive attitude, and inner strength. Charlie loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and the beautiful valley he lived in. He was a true believer in lifelong learning, loved all the trips to Uncle Glen's cabin, hunting trips out west, and gathering with family and friends; re-telling old stories, especially about their hunting expeditions. Charlie was also an avid Green Bay Packer fan. He was a wonderful husband and father who adored his two daughters. He was a cherished son, brother, and uncle, and a strong leader who was fun-loving, trustworthy, and fought the fight of his life with a mental toughness second to none. Charlie also treasured the bond that was made between himself and his Army comrades.
Survivors include his wife, Lisa; his two beloved daughters, Bailey and Olivia; his parents, Charles and Mary Gartner of Genoa; his sister Dana (Dick) Janssen of Westby, Wis.; a niece, Candace Manske and her daughters, Dova, Leona, and Hermona, all of France; a niece, Casey Gartner (Andy) and their daughter, Brenna, all of Viroqua, Wis.; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Warren and Marcia Kufalk of Mukwonago, Wis.; two sisters-in-law, Cheryl (Bill) Sommers-Miller of Decorah, Iowa and Karen (Dave) Jones of Mukwonago, Wis; two brothers-in-law, Brian (Barb) Kufalk of Mukwonago and Darrell (Nora) Kufalk of Waukesha, Wis.; a very special cousin, Brad (Lisa) Bray and their children, Lindsey and Ashley, all of Onalaska, Wis.; and many other cousins, aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, and close friends.
