Obituary for Charlotte Ann (Knight) Mangan

Charlotte Ann (Knight) Mangan, 91, of LaCrosse, passed away Monday, September 5, 2011, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.

Charlotte was born August 8, 1920, in Akron, Ohio, to Preston J. and Laura (Hoyt) Knight.  She grew up in Akron and Ellet, Ohio and attended Kent College in Ohio where she received a major in speech and a minor in music.  She met her husband, John, in Akron where he worked at Goodyear Tire Co. and they moved to La Crosse in 1948 to make this their home.  John worked at Trane Company for 37 years and Charlotte went to the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse to get re-certified as an elementary music teacher.  She taught elementary music for 15 years in the Franklin and Roosevelt Schools in LaCrosse until her retirement in 1984.  Charlotte had many devoted friends through the Music Study Club and the LaCrosse Festival of Arts and enjoyed many symphonies and plays and was a supporter of those organizations.  Charlotte was also dedicated to St. Paul's Lutheran Church in La Crosse where she was Choir Director for 27 years.  Her love of music inspired many children, as well as adults in the community and she would light up a room by playing the piano and people would always join in with singing and dancing.  She played the piano up until two days before she died.  Charlotte will always be remembered for her generosity, her graceful hands in music, and her inspiring quotes when writing to friends and family.  Some of her fondest memories as a child were of going to her Grandpa and Grandma Hoyt's farm in Clearfield, Penn., and seeing her 13 cousins.  Charlotte was married to John for 57 years until he passed away in 2003. They had two wonderful children, Preston and Nancy, and she was deeply devoted to them, as well as to her granddaughters, Rochelle and Kathryn Mangan, who she adored very much.

Survivors include her son, Preston J. (Kim) Mangan of Cashton, Wis.; her daughter, Nancy Sartz, of Albuquerque, N.M.; her granddaughters, Rochelle Mangan of La Crosse and Kathryn Mangan of Cashton, Wis.; her niece, Kim Martin of Akron, Ohio; and her nephew, Kirk Knight of Alameda, Calif.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a brother; and a sister-in-law.

Charlotte was loved and admired very much by her children, daughter-in-law, and granddaughters and she will be greatly missed by all.
