Obituary for Edward John Kendhammer, Jr.


Edward John Kendhammer, Jr., 72, of La Crosse, passed away Saturday, August 20, 2011, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.
He was born October 8, 1938, in La Crosse to Edward and Erma (Strittmater) Kendhammer, Sr. Edward was a 1957 graduate of Aquinas High School in La Crosse. He then served in the United States Army National Guard from 1956 until being honorably discharged in 1959. On May 1, 1965, Edward married Marie Weber in La Crosse. During his lifetime, Edward was employed at numerous companies such as, The Garment Company, Jack Winters, The Company Store, and Winona Knitting Mills. After his retirement, he went to work part-time at Walsh Golf Center in La Crosse, which became his passion. He loved working there as the head greens-keeper. Edward enjoyed hunting, camping, fishing, and keeping his lawn well kept. He loved watching the Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Cubs. Edward also loved spending time with his family and friends. He was an amazing man and a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Edward will be remembered for his infectious smile and his predictable response of, "fine, fine, fine." He will be dearly missed.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Marie; two sons, Michael (Teri) Kendhammer and their children, David and Maggie, all of La Crosse, and Thomas (Cindy) Kendhammer and their children, Brad, Justin, Taylor, and Becky, all of Onalaska, Wis.; one daughter, Christine Kendhammer (Richard Kreibich) and his daughter, Libby Kreibich, all of La Crosse; one brother, James (Marie) Kendhammer of La Crosse; one sister, MaryAnn (Harlan) Hicks of West Salem; two sisters-in-law, Patty Kendhammer and Marlene Weber, both of La Crosse; one brother-in-law, Donald Weber of Melmo, Minn.; and many nieces, nephews, and his many friends at Walsh Golf Center.
Edward was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Shirley (Richard) Clarkin; one brother, Robert "Chub" Kendhammer; and one nephew, Ricky Hicks.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, August 25, 2011, at 10:00 a.m., at St. James The Less Catholic Church, 1032 Caledonia St., La Crosse. Father Robert Schaller will officiate. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Catholic Cemetery with military honors by the Roy L. Vingers American Legion Post 52 of La Crosse and the United States Army Funeral Honor Guard. Friends may call at Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home, (Woodruff Chapel), 4239 Mormon Coulee Rd., La Crosse, on Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Catholic Prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Friends may also call at the church on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of Mass. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to the staff at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center.
