Frederick W. "Fritz" Garbers
Frederick W. "Fritz" Garbers, 85, of West Salem, passed away, Thursday, August 11, 2011, at Mulder Health Care Facility, West Salem.
He was born August 1, 1926, in La Crosse to Fred and Amanda (Niedfeldt) Garbers.  On June 19, 1948, he married Joy LaVonne Stelloh at St. John's Lutheran Church in Barre Mills.  Fritz was employed at Allis Chalmers in La Crosse for 22 years until its closing.  During that time, he also worked for Martin Ender in West Salem.  In April of 1970, Fritz began working for the Village of West Salem and was a supervisor with the street and water department, retiring in 1992.  He was a member of Christ Ev. Lutheran Church in West Salem where he was an usher and served on the church cemetery board as well as other committees.  Fritz enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening, and traveling with his family.
Survivors include his wife, Joy LaVonne; five children, Thomas (Bonnie), Patricia Gums, Diane (Roy) Koltermann, Michael (Karon Ristey), and Carmen (Vernon) Mickels; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by two sisters, Marian (Vincent) Paulus and Leona (Ervine) Plenge; one brother, LaVerne Garbers; and his son-in-law, James Gums.
Funeral services will be Monday, August 15, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Ev. Lutheran Church, 500 Park St., West Salem.  Pastor Joel Stuebs will officiate.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.  Friends may call at Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home, (Jostad Chapel), 121 N. Youlon St., West Salem, on Sunday from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. and at the church on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.  Memorials may be given to Christ Ev.
