Wilford L. "Bud" Garves


Wilford L. "Bud" Garves, 87, of Sparta, passed away, Wednesday, June 22, 2011, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.

He was born April 12, 1924, in La Crosse to Leslie and Hilma (Knutson) Garves. Bud was a very proud veteran having served in the United States Marine Corps. He enlisted on September 17, 1942, and served in Guam and Iwo Jima, he was honorably discharged on December 27, 1945. On May 27, 1950, Bud married Lorraine "Lorrie" Amundson at Trinity Lutheran Church, Sparta. He worked in construction at ARCO and was then employed by NSP, retiring as a supervisor in 1983. Bud was a 50 year member of the Anderson-Good American Legion Post 40, of Bangor and the Bangor VFW Post 8278. Bud and Lorrie loved to travel, including trips to Europe, Norway, the Panama Canal, Alaska, and Tahiti, their most favorite being their trip to Ireland. Bud loved fishing in Canada, woodworking, gardening, and watching the Packers and the Brewers.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Lorrie; his son, James (Patti) of Sparta, and their sons, Mike and Matt; his daughter, Pat (Stan) Manke of Bangor, and their children, Jacob and Hilary; and his daughter, Peggy (Gary) Czechowicz of La Crosse, and their children, Tim (Carmen) and Tanya; two great-grandchildren, Jeremy and Mollie Marie; his brothers, Richard (Marilyn) of Tolono, Ill., and Howard (Joyce) of Sparta; his sisters, Joyce Hatz of Bangor, Bonnie Garves of Sparta, and Mollie (Jr) Van Wormer of Sparta; his brother-in-law, Howard Raymer; and his sisters-in-law, Gladys Amundson, Virginia Pophal, and Donna Garves; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Bud was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Roy Garves.

Memorial services will be Saturday, June 25, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home, Hwy 162 and Hattan St., Bangor.  Rev. Cindy Arndt will officiate.  Burial will be in Burns Cemetery with military honors by the Anderson-Good American Legion Post 40 and VFW Post 8278, both of Bangor, and the United States Marine Corps Funeral Honor Guard.  Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.  In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.  Online condolences may be sent at
