Lester C. Kastenschmidt, 80, of Bangor, died Monday, June 20, 2011, at Mayo Clinic Health System - Franciscan Healthcare, La Crosse.
He was born September 26, 1930, in La Crosse to Herman and Wilma (Fischer) Kastenschmidt and grew up on the family farm in the Town of Burns.  Lester was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in Germany from 1955-1957.  On March 25, 1955, he married Evelyn "Evie" Johnson at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in West Salem and she preceded him in death on January 30, 2007.  Lester was employed at Pepsi as a deliveryman and also farmed in Burns from 1958-1995.  Farming to him was not only a job but also a hobby.  In 1995, he semi-retired from farming and moved into Bangor.  Lester always stayed busy by helping his children with any size project or job at their homes.  He loved to cut wood and also take vacations with his family and friends.  Lester enjoyed playing cards, gardening, fishing, hunting, and taking trips to Black River.
Survivors include three daughters and one son, Virginia (Ron) LeJeune of West Salem, Nancy (Jerry) Steigerwald of Bangor, Barbara (Rick) Mikshowsky of Coon Valley, and Jeffrey (Jan) Kastenschmidt of Sparta; 12 grandchildren, Heather (Jeff) Walker, Stacey and Steven LeJeune, Angela, Jared, and Tyler Steigerwald, Travis, Kassi, and Cory Mikshowsky, Chad (Crystal) Kassera, Jesse (Rachel) Kassera, and Jenna Kastenschmidt; five step-great-grandchildren, Sadie and Sophie Kassera, Kadence Kassera, and Amber and Morgan Walker; his twin-brother, Leland (Marlene) Kastenschmidt; one sister, Mary (Harlan) Hoff; one sister-in-law, Doris Kastenschmidt; one brother-in-law, Alan (Cristi) Johnson; and many nieces and nephews.  In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Donald "Casey" Kastenschmidt.
Funeral services will be Saturday, June 25, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 359 N. Leonard St., West Salem.  Rev. Glenn Borreson will officiate.  Burial will be in Burns Cemetery with military honors by the Anderson-Good American Legion Post 40 of Bangor and the U.S. Army Funeral Honor Guard.  Friends may call at Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home, Hwy 162 and Hattan St., Bangor, on Friday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.  In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.  Online condolences may be sent at www.jandtfredrickson.com.
