Obituary for Richard "Rich" Garbers

Rich finally achieved his ultimate goal in life by going home to his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, Jan 23, 2018. He was born on Aug. 10, 1940, to Richard and Elvera Garbers. Rich was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Barre Mills. After high school, he served in the Navy aboard the aircraft carrier USS BON HOMME RICHARD CVA-31 as a SM (signalman) 2nd Class Petty Officer. On May 12, 1962, he married Dorothy Koll at Bethel Lutheran Church in La Crosse. He worked for Northern States Power Company for 35 years as a lineman and district Representative. Rich is survived by his wife and best friend, Dorothy; two children, Terri (Scott) Wagner of Sparta and Richard (Anne) Garbers of Rotonda West, Fla.; two sisters, Joyce (Paul) Garness of La Crosse and Lorna (Ben) Southall of West Salem; four grandchildren, Kenny Thesing of Sparta, Lindsey (Dustin) Harnden of West Salem, and Ashlee and Andrew Garbers, both of Rotonda West, Fla.; and two great-grandsons, Owen and Keegan Harnden of West Salem. He was preceded in death by his parents. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m., on Saturday, Jan. 27, 2018, at Christ Ev.Lutheran Church, 500 Park Street, West Salem. Rev. Galen J. Riediger will officiate. Burial will follow in the Christ Ev. Lutheran Cemetery with military honors rendered by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard and the Berg-Hemker-Olson American Legion Post 51 of West Salem. A visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of service, Saturday at the church. Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Homes and Crematory, Jostad Chapel, West Salem, is in charge of arrangements.
