Obituary for Terrence "Terry" Laylan

Terry F. Laylan, 80, of Genoa, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018, at his home. He was born July, 17, 1937, in La Crosse, to Frank and Mable (Ghelfi) Laylan. Terry grew up in Genoa and graduated from De Soto High School in 1955. He joined the United States Navy in 1955 and completed his basic training in Virginia. Terry served as a landing signal officer on an aircraft carrier stationed primarily in the Phillipines. He met Nan Sellers while in Memphis, Tenn., and they were united in marriage on March 18, 1958. Tony, Jenny, and Kirk were born in Memphis, Tenn., and Frank and Mike were born in Racine, Wis. While living in Racine, he worked for the board of education and later went into the police academy. Terry was a police officer for three years; then they moved to Union Grove and Terry worked for American Motors and Case Construction. He then moved back to his hometown in Geona and worked as a conductor for Burlington Northern Railroad until his retirement. In his free time, Terry enjoyed fishing, hunting, and softball; however, most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family. Survivors include, his wife, Nan; five children, Tony (Jayne), Jenny Davis, Kirk Laylan, Frank (Barb), and Mike (Lori); 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Doris Laylan; two nephews; and two nieces. Terry was preceded in death by his parents; his son-in-law, Terry Davis; daughter-in-law, Pam Laylan; grandson, Nathan Laylan; and his brother, Marty Laylan. A time of remembrance will be held at 4 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 27, 2018, at Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home, Woodruff Chapel, 4239 Mormon Coulee Rd., La Crosse. A visitaiton will be held from 1 p.m. until the time of remembrance, Saturday, at the funeral home. Online condolences may be sent at
