Obituary for Mavis E. Kjos

Mavis Elaine (Hammer) Kjos, 92, died peacefully Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2017, at Mayo Health System in La Crosse, after a brief illness, surrounded by family. She was born Oct. 22, 1925, in Pleasentville, Wis., to Henry and Tillie Hammer. She married Alf Kjos June 29, 1946, and they had two children. Mavis loved to garden, bake and cook for her family and was known as the “cookie lady” to all the neighborhood kids. She took care of many children over the years. Many who have stayed in touch. She is survived by her sons, John Kjos and Robert (Sue) Kjos; grandchildren, Aaron (Kristen) Kjos, Anne (Brad) Sprehn; and five great-grandchildren, who she enjoyed seeing very much; sisters-in-law, Barbara Hammer, Dorothy Every, Delores Osweiler, Beverly Davis and Audrey Wedwick; brother-in-law, Vernon Kjos; very special friends, whom she considered family, Scott and Laurie Neader, their children Cameron, Ashlyn and Macy; Jim and Tammy Netwal and daughter, Lilly; Vince and Katrina Meyer; and many other friends and relatives. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; eight brothers and sisters; and eight sisters and brothers-in-law. Mom was my rock through some rough times and she fought hard these last years not to leave me. I love you Mom. I will join you and dad in heaven some day. In accordance with Mavis’ wishes, a private graveside service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials would be preferred.
