Obituary for Carmen Joy Middendorf

Carmen Joy Middendorf, 88, of Caledonia, Minn., passed away, Friday, November, 10, 2017, at Caledonia Care and Rehab. She was born January 7, 1929, to Julius and Clara (Thompson) Anderson of Houston, Minn. Carmen was a teacher at French Creek School in Allamakee County, Iowa, before she married Walter "Junior" Middendorf in Houston, Minn., in 1949. Together they farmed in the Winnebago Valley until 1972; they then moved to a farm just ouside of Eitzen, Minn. Carmen worked as a receptionist for the Holiday Inn in La Crosse and later opened The Country Gift Store and Granny's Cellar at her home where she enjoyed teaching painting and ceramics classes. She was also involved with the Houston County Relay for Life and helping at the Houston County Fair as a superintendent for the arts building for many years. Some of Carmen's favorite pastimes included going to garage sales, playing cards, and having coffee with her friends. Survivors include her children, Jeffrey, Gregory (Jean), Mark, and Zane, all of Caledonia, Brian of Alamogordo, N.M., and Janine Wallace of Goldon, Colo.; grandchildren, Mike and Luke (Amanda Zagrzebski) Middendorf of Stevens Point, Wis., Aaron (Amanda) of Waterloo, Iowa, Chantz (fiance, Josh Duff), and Brandan Wallace; step-granddaughter, Jessica (Josh) Pettingill of Denver, Colo.; great-grandson, Gunnar Middendorf; step-great-grandson, Ramaro Nieto; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Carmen was preceded in death by her husband, Junior; daughter, Christy Ann; her parents; sister, Arlene and her husband, James Martin; and brother, Marlow Anderson and his wife, Gloria. In accordance with her wishes, Carmen's body will be cremated and a private service will be held at Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Homes and Crematory, Caledonia Chapel. A private burial will be in St. Peter's Memorial Cemetery in New Albin, Iowa, at a later date.
