Obituary for Richard Dean Lueck

Richard Dean Lueck, 71, passed away from gastric cancer on Friday, October 20, 2017, at his home with his family by his side. Richard was born to Otto and Luella (Plenge) Lueck in La Crosse on June 15, 1946. He was baptized and confirmed at Christ Ev. Lutheran Church in West Salem. Richard attended Walker School through sixth grade and then West Salem Schools where he graduated in 1964. On May 20, 1967, Richard was united in marriage to Marilyn Stetzer and they lived, and raised their daughters, in the West Salem and Melrose area. Richard held several jobs during his lifetime including Trane Company; farming on his in-laws, Earl and Ruth Stetzer’s, dairy farm in Burr Oak; doing maintenance and custodial work at Riverview Mobile Home Court and then at Ho-Chunk Nation. It was then that Richard retired due to health complications from having polio at age 5. Richard was a life-long member of Christ Ev. Lutheran Church where he served as a head usher and assisted with money counting. He had a passion for gardening throughout his lifetime and for many years his garden was over an acre in size. After retiring and moving back to West Salem his passion continued with several raised garden beds and numerous flowers. He couldn’t wait for the ground to thaw in the spring to get his vegetables and flowers planted. Richard also grew his own grapes over the years that he used to make wine and jelly. With the help of his family, he was able to enjoy his last grape harvest this past September. Later in life he caught the fishing bug and spent many mornings fishing on the dock at Neshonoc Lake. He was a big Green Bay Packer fan and spent many Sundays watching the game with his Grandson Gavyn. He took pleasure in going to Gavyn’s school and sporting events and fondly referred to him as “Peanuts”. Richard is survived by his wife of 50 years, Marilyn; two daughters, Kimberly and Dawn both of Holmen; grandson Gavyn; four siblings, Doris (James) Gautsch of Sparta, Ruth (Joseph) Kendall of Sparta, Carl (Donna) Lueck of West Salem, Betty (Clyde) Lee of Onalaska; two sisters-in-law Karen (Theron) Slaback of La Crosse, Barbara (Wally) Chandler of Sparta; many nieces and nephews and special friends Sheila (Sarutzki) Aukes family and Sherrie Waldera family. In addition to his parents, Otto and Luella, he was preceded in death by his in-laws Earl and Ruth Stetzer, nieces Annette Gautsch and Kirsten Chandler and nephew Dean Slaback. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Pastor Joel Steubs and Pastor Galen Riediger for their many visits and prayers during his illness; Dr. Petra Nedoba, Dr. Jonathan Ticku and the staff of oncology at Mayo Clinic; the staff of Mayo Hospice and staff of BrightStar Care for their compassionate care and support to Richard and his family. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, October 27, 2017, at Christ Ev. Lutheran Church, 500 Park St., West Salem. Pastor Galen Riediger will officiate. Burial will follow at Christ Ev. Lutheran Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Thursday and from 10 a.m. until the time of service Friday, both at Christ Ev. Lutheran Church in West Salem.
