Obituary for Duane Burton Risberg


Duane Burton Risberg, 84, of La Crosse, passed away, Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2017, at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse. He was born July 22, 1933, in Blair to Bennie and Minnie (Myhre) Risberg. He was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Blair. He was a talented athlete in his high school years and was a 1952 graduate of Blair High School. Duane married the love of his life, Eloice Mae Hamilton, from Galesville, on June 27, 1953. From this blessed union: two children, Debra Lynn (1954) and Diane Marie (1960), and grandchildren, Matthew (Kacie) Lee, Ramsey Lee, Nathan (Roshell) Lee, Jennifer Gunderson, and Tristan Groleau; and great-grandchildren, Declan, Shelby, and Tytus Lee, were born. Duane was a faithful and loving son, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. When he was drafted in the United States Army in 1954, his wife and first-born daughter traveled to Camp Chaffee, Arkansas, to be with him. Duane served in Newfoundland during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1956. Duane worked at Trane Company in La Crosse for over 40 years as a certified welder. He also taught welding at night school at La Crosse Vocational School (now WTC) in La Crosse. Duane traveled worldwide for repair jobs for Trane Company. He was mechanically minded and could fix and build nearly anything. Duane was a member of Grace Ev. Lutheran Church in La Crosse from 1957 until the present time. He was on the building committee for the new church in 1960 and was on various committees throughout the years. He and his loving wife, Eloice, were active members of the community throughout their lifetime; dancing, bowling, camping, and socializing were among their favorite activities. Survivors include,daughter, Debra (Dennis) Lee of Hudson, Wis.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; cousins; and others including, John Semlar, and Joseph Reynolds. Duane was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Eloice Mae; his parents; his daughter, Diane Marie Groleau; in-laws, Lawrence and Verna Hamilton; brothers and sisters, Florence Schultz, Eldora (Ray) Paulson, Sylvina (Lawrence) Clipper, Myron (Carla) Thompson, Omer (Marie) Thompson, and Harvey Thompson; in-laws, Elaine (Larry) Beadle and Lawrence (Arlyce) Hamilton. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Oct. 16, 2017, at Grace Ev. Lutheran Church, 2720 So. 26th St., La Crosse. Rev. Jonathan Rimmert will officiate. Following the funeral services, military honors will be rendered by the Roy L. Vingers American Legion Post 52 of La Crosse and the United States Army Funeral Honor Guard. Entombment will be in the Gardens of Peace Mausoleum at Mormon Coulee Memorial Park Cemetery, La Crosse. A visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service Monday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Grace Ev. Lutheran Church, La Crosse, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
