Obituary for La Verne F. Schaller


La Verne F. Schaller, 88, of Bangor Wis., passed away peacefully Tuesday, October 17, 2017, surrounded by his family at St. Clare Hospice House in Baraboo. He was born August 29, 1929, in Bangor, Wis., to Paul and Greta (Ziegler) Schaller. After graduation from Bangor High School, Verny enlisted in the Army and served during the Korean War. Upon returning home, he met Rose Kaiser and they were married on September 20, 1955, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bangor. He was an avid sportsman who especially loved hunting, fishing and camping with his family and friends. He was also a great sports spectator who enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren play and discussing his favorite teams. When he wasn’t outdoors, Verny spent time puttering in his workshop repairing just about anything that needed fixing. He will be remembered for his kind and gentle nature, which was evident in his care and concern for all others, especially with Rose, his wife of almost 60 years. Survivors include three children, Ann Benz, Paul (Nancy) Schaller, and Todd (Kristy) Schaller; five grandchildren, Sean and Scott Benz and Kayla, Elizabeth, and Jacob Schaller; four siblings, Al (Florence) and Gene Schaller, Margie Korn, and Judy (Tom) Althoff; one sister-in-law, Jeanette Schaller; one brother-in-law, Art Sommerfield; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rose; siblings, Lyle Schaller, Eunice (Billy) Gerke, Armand “Ham” Schaller, and Mavis Sommerfield; one sister-in-law, Judy Schaller; and one brother-in-law, Harvey Korn. A funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 23, 2017, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 303 South 16th Avenue, Bangor. Fr. John Potaczek and Fr. Douglas Robertson will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military honors by the Clements-Anderson-Leis VFW Post 8278 of Bangor. A visitation beginning with a rosary will be from 4 p.m. until 6:30 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 22, 2017, at the Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home, Hwy. 162 and Hattan St., Bangor.
