Obituary for Michael J. Miller

Michael John Miller Michael John Miller, 76, of Mindoro, died Tuesday, August 22, 2017, at his home. He was born on February 21, 1941, to Lyle and Doris (McCartney) Miller, the fourth of twelve children. Michael grew up in Onalaska across the street from Skogen's IGA, so he had a good time with the Skogen boys, Tom, Dave, and Gary delivering ads for the grocery store and playing ball in their back yard. In seventh grade his family moved to the Mindoro area where he went to Union Mills Grade School and Mindoro High School, where he pitched for the baseball team and also played on the basketball team. Michael was an avid Cubs fan. His dad had a chicken farm, so Mike worked feeding the chickens and cleaning up after them. Upon graduation, he joined the Army, being stationed in Korea for thirteen months. Mike then worked in the office at Scott Burgess Coal and Fuel Oil. He married Carol Welda and they moved to Mequon, Wis., where she taught French at Homestead High School, and Mike enrolled at UW-Milwaukee. They later moved back to La Crosse where he attended UW-La Crosse. Mike graduated with honors, with majors in history and political science. He taught high school for eight years, and then became a salesman for St. Paul Book and Stationery, selling school and office products. Survivors include three sons, Shawn, Kevin, and Brian; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his beloved granddaughter, Jayden Miller. A graveside service will be held on Monday, August 28, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at Farmington Cemetery with military honors by the Gunderson-Gilbertson American Legion Post 507 of Mindoro and the United States Army Funeral Honor Guard. Pastor Chris Fahey will officiate. A luncheon will follow the graveside service at Mindoro Lutheran Church. Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Homes and Crematory, Jostad Chapel, West Salem is assisting the family. Online condolences may be sent at
