Obituary for Peggy Elizabeth Garvalia

Peggy Elizabeth Garvalia, 73, of Genoa, passed away Friday, Aug. 18, 2017, at Mayo Clinic Health System, in La Crosse. She was born Oct. 26, 1943, in Black River Falls, Wis., to Harvey and Mildred (Carmen) Gratke. She was a 1961 graduate of De Soto High School. On April 20, 1963, Peggy married Ronnie Garvalia at St. Charles Parish in Genoa and they celebrated 54 years of marriage. Peggy was a homemaker for many years, after she was married to raise their three children. She then became a beautician and worked at the Hollywood Beauty Salon in La Crosse for several years. She also opened a beauty salon in her home serving friends and family. Peggy sold life insurance for a time, but her favorite job besides being a mother and grandmother, was being the school secretary at St. Charles where she eventually retired in the early 2000’s. Peggy was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She loved boating and most weekends during the summer were spent on a sandbar on the Mississippi River with family and friends and many summer vacations were enjoyed at Blanche Lake in Minn. In the winter, there were many ski trips taken in the Midwest, coining the “Genoa Ski Club”. She was an avid reader, enjoyed quilting, and stained glass work. Peggy loved traveling and made great memories with Ronnie traveling to Lake Havasu, as well as Italy and Ireland. After retirement, she and Ronnie spent summers camping in their RV. More than anything, Peggy loved spending time with her kids, grandkids, extended family, and her friends. Nothing made her happier then seeing her kids and grandkids and doing whatever she could do to support them. Peggy also LOVED dogs and leaves behind her beloved, Lizzie. Survivors include her husband, Ronald; a daughter, Carrie (Kurt) Begalke of Oconomowoc, Wis.; a son, Collin (Lisa) Garvalia, of Genoa, Wis.; and a daughter, Carisa (Jeremy) Brockman, of Oconomowoc, Wis.; nine grandchilden, Brynne and Claire Begalke, Sam Halverson, Tony, Luke, and Joe Garvalia, and Tobyn, Jackson, and Alice Brockman; one brother, Jerry (Gloria) Gratke of La Crosse; one sister, Edith vonGradtke of Minneapolis, Minn.; one brother-in-law, Jerry Garvalia of Genoa; and many nieces and nephews and extended family. Peggy was preceded in death by her parents. A funeral mass will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, August 24, 2017, at St. Charles Catholic Church, Genoa. Father Doss will officiate. A reception will follow at the school. A visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of mass Thursday at the church.
