Obituary for Buford B. Hunter

Buford Bert Hunter, 86, of Valley, Wis., passed away Sunday, Aug. 13, 2017, at Mulder Health Care Facility in West Salem. He was born July 7, 1931, in La Farge, to William and Hazel (Sanders) Hunter. At the age of two and one half he became very ill; when he got better it was realized that he lost his hearing and was completely deaf. When it came time for Buford to go to school, he was sent to The School for The Deaf in Delavan, Wis. There he participated in basketball, football, wrestling, baseball, and track. Buford met the love of his life, Lorraine R. Mades, through the La Crosse Area Deaf Club and they were married on Aug. 27, 1960, and were blessed with six children. Together they made many moves throughout their 57 years together; Beloit, Rockford, Warrens, Wilton, Sparta, Arcadia, Onalaska, La Crosse, West Salem, and Bangor. Buford learned a trade and worked as a carpenter. His carpentry skills were outstanding and known all over the state of Wisconsin. Buford was especially known for his the cabinets he constructed. He was a perfectionist who’s motto was, “measure twice – cut once.” Survivors include his wife, Lorraine; James (Elizabeth) Hunter of Ironton, Mo., Marlene (Mike) Boehm of Stoddard, Joseph Bert Hunter of La Crosse, Margaret (Paul) Summerfield of Rockland, and Diane Meyer of La Crosse; grandchildren, Dale House, Cathy (Josh) Mitchell, Kristina Boehm (Jon Bekkum), Brandi Boehm, Craig, Nadia, and Dominic Summerfield; Ronald Jamison, Jr., Amanda Clingenpeel, and Sara (Travis) Buck; great-grandchildren, Mackienzie, Candace, and Bridget Mitchell, Bentley Bekkum, and Elena Buck; niece, Shirley Sorenson of Hillsboro; in-laws, Vernetta Fish, Harold (Jackie) Mades, Bev Mades, and Audrey Mades; and many other nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Buford was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Robert (Virginia); his sister, Shirley; his son, David John Hunter; and his in-laws, John and Lydia Mades, Viola (Rudy) Garbers, Waldemar Mades, Maynard Mades, Marlin (Arlene) Mades, and Dean Mades. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Sat. Aug. 19, 2017, at River of Life Assembly of God Church, 1214 County Road P.H., Onalaska. Pastor Jacob Wallace will officiate. Burial will be in the Valley Cemetery, Valley, Wis. A visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of service Saturday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
