Obituary for James G. Dovenberg

James “Dovey” G. Dovenberg James “Dovey” G. Dovenberg, 76, of West Salem, passed away peacefully,Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2017, at his home. He was born Oct. 12, 1940, in La Crosse County to Vernon and Lorene (Pfaff) Dovenberg. Jim graduated from West Salem High School in 1958. In 1961, he married his high school sweetheart, Darlene Hoier, at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Barre Mills. Together they had three children and recently celebrated 55 years of marriage. Jim farmed together with Darlene in the West Salem area until the time of his death. He enjoyed watching football, baseball, and golf, especially watching the Green Bay Packers and the Wisconsin Badgers, and he had a lifelong love of dogs. Jim was a member of the Der Ferkel Club and enjoyed being involved in the West Investment Club, both for many years. He loved his grandchildren and the time they spent together. Jim was always up for a visit from Pastor Andrew Schultz, strengthening his faith in the Lord. He was a member of St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Barre Mills and a proud member of the Son’s of the American Legion with the Legion Post in West Salem. Survivors include his wife, Darlene; his son, Ted (Tamara) Dovenberg of Burns; two daughters, Sue (Scott) Rowe and Sara (Tim) Marsolek, both of West Salem; grandchildren, Alisyn and Hayden Dovenberg, and Megan and Evan Rowe; sisters-in-law, Donna Dovenberg of West Salem and Marcella Kastenschmidt of Bangor; nephews and nieces, Jon Kastenschmidt, Paul and Pat Dovenberg, Lisa Brickl, Laura Bonum, Mary Perez, Julie Meier, Anne Kohlmeier, and Katie Reedich; and other relatives and friends. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Margaret and Joan; his brother, Russell; his brother-in-law, Elmer Kastenschmidt; sister and brother-in-law, Donna (Don) Tremain; and his nephew, Tom Tremain. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 5, 2017, at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church, Barre Mills. Rev. Andrew Schultz will officiate. Burial will be in Christ Lutheran Cemetery, West Salem. A visitation will be held from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m., Friday, Aug. 4, 2017, and from 10 a.m. until the time of service both at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Berg-Hemker-Olson American Legion Post 51 of West Salem or St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church, Barre Mills.
